"Wael Kadlo is a Syrian documentary filmmaker and actor, known for his deep exploration of social issues through an anthropological lens. Born in Damascus in 1980, he first pursued a Bachelor’s degree in French Literature, which he completed in 2007. His passion for visual storytelling led him to earn a Master’s in Cultural and Social Anthropology (Visual Anthropology track) from the University of Amsterdam in 2024.
Kadlo’s debut feature-length documentary, The Way Home, premiered at IDFA in 2018 and was screened at numerous international festivals, earning recognition for its compelling narrative. His latest work, The Mukhtar's Chair, a short documentary produced as part of his master’s thesis, delves into the challenges of integration fa
ced by Syrian refugees in the Netherlands.
Alongside his filmmaking, Kadlo is currently engaged in anthropological research on the transformations within the Syrian community during the war. His work consistently focuses on social themes, using film as a medium to explore migration, displacement, and identity from an anthropological perspective."
